ELLEN ATHENS

Line, form, volume...then there’s color, my
favorite.

For years I would combine strands of colored wool
and weave images from nature into tapestries. Then I
began to combine fine grains of colored glass, kiln-
fired onto silver, to create cloisonne enamels. Rods
of colored glass are heated in a torch flame and
wound around steel mandrels to create miniature
abstracts called beads. Gemstone beads of different
shapes and colors are arranged to create rhythm and
contrast, to accent the beads or pendants I make.

... and texture ties it all together. My jewelry is not
about hard-edged, high polished, modern. My
inspiration is still the forest and gardens, rocks and sky.
